Double-Knit Mittens

Saturdays: October 4 and 11, 2014

3:00 to 6:00pm

Taught by Monica

Class Cost $40.00

 What are Double-Knit Mittens?

What is better than a soft, warm layer of wool against your hands during the frigid Fairbanks winters? How about TWO layers of soft, warm wool!

During this class you will knit a pair of Reversible double-thick mittens that are worked in double-knitting pattern, an ingenious stitch that forms two layers of knitting on the same needle.

Mittens will be knit FLAT, knitting both layers of the mitten at the same time. Mittens will then be sewn up along the outside edge to create the finished product. These mittens make a great Christmas break and live up to even the toughest winters of Fairbanks.

Materials Needed:

Pattern will be provided in class.

Approx. 6 oz. of worsted weight yarn. A soft acrylic or a wool blend that can be washed will stand up to kids and the elements well.**(Two skeins of Malabrigo, Dream in Color Classy, Debbie Bliss Tweed or other Worsted usually does the trick.)

{C}      US size 6-8 needle depending on your gauge (straights or circulars)

{C}      A couple of stitch markers, Stitch holder, Sewing needle (to seam up the side and weave in the ends)

Skills Needed:

Please come to class knowing how to knit and how to purl. You will also need to know how to K2tog (knit two stitches together), P2tog (purl two stitches together) and to M1 (make a stitch) however, these skills can be learned along the way.

If you already have your yarn picked out and want to get a jump on the mitten, cast on 48 stitches and work a k2, p2 rib working flat back and forth for 4". Don't forget, the mittens are knit FLAT.

To register for a class, stop by the shop or call (907) 479-5830. ALL CLASSES MUST BE PAID IN FULL AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION. CLASS FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. Teachers will be available before class to help with purchase of yarn and other materials for the class and INUA staff are always happy to help.
