Knitting Lace with Beads - Oslo Walk Shawl

Using beads in lace knitting can add a gorgeous bit of sparkle resulting in incredibly beautiful and special projects. For this class we will be making a lovely crescent shaped shawl that combines beading and lace. The class will cover tips and tricks for beaded lace that will not only result in this fabulous project, but also provide confidence in tackling beaded projects in the future.

Requirements:

Students should be comfortable with:

  • basic knitting (knit, purl, yarn overs, decreases)
  • working from charts. Although the class will cover how to read the chart, the lace portion is based completely on charted directions.

Materials:

  • 2-ply lace to light fingering yarn- solid to semi-solid recommended.
    • Yardage depends on your needle size and gauge. Can take from ~310 to 430 yards.
    • Lace weight such as Juniper Moon Findley, Jojoland Consonance or Cascade Alpaca lace
    • Light fingering such as Malabrigo Sock, Handmaiden Sea Silk,
    • Remember: If you choose a yarn that is fluffy/fuzzy and not smooth (such as Shibui silk cloud), it will be very difficult to undo stitches if you make a mistake.
  • 644 Glass Seed Beads (minimum needed): ~20 grams of 8/0 or 3mm, ~48 grams of 6/0 or 4mm. (Size depends on yarn chosen. You want smooth round glass beads. Seed beads tend to have the biggest holes. Make sure you do not pick a bead with too small a hole for your yarn weight. Yarn must fit through the hole doubled.
    • Size 8/0 or 6/0 generally work best. Use 8/0 on finer yarn, and 6/0 on slightly heavier. (Pattern lists 3mm beads, 4mm beads would also work for most yarn)
    •  I recommend also getting extra, since beads are invariably dropped and lost
    • Online Sources (in case you can’t find what you want in town)
      •  Beadwrangler - http://www.7beads.com/bead-main.htm
      • Artbeads - Toho Seed Beads: http://www.artbeads.com/round-toho-glass-seed-beads.html
      •  Delicas: http://www.artbeads.com/miyuki-delicas-seed-beads.html
  • 32” – 47” circular needle. Cable length is not critical as this will be knit back and forth
    • Needle size depends on yarn, but I would recommend US 5-7 for lace weight or light fingering. (The pattern calls for US 7, but the class sample was knit using US 5)
      • Knit a small swatch to see if you like the way stockinette looks with your needle/yarn combination
  • Crochet hook small enough to fit through your beads
    • For seed beeds (8/0 or 6/0) 0.9 mm (size 11) or smaller hooks generally work.
    • For 3 mm beads, you may need to use a smaller (0.6mm) hook

Useful to have:

  •  Crochet cotton, thread, or dental floss (for lifelines)
  • Darning needle (for threading lifeline)
  •  Stitch Markers
