What is Entrelac?

According to Wikipedia…

“Entrelac is a knitting technique used to create a textured diamond pattern. While the end result resembles basket-woven strips of knitted fabric, the actual material comprises interconnected squares on two different orientations.”

In this class you will learn the technique of Entrelac by knitting a beautiful and WARM Entrelac Scarf out of the wonderful color changing Noro Yarn. Entrelac can be used to knit almost anything including hats, mittens, scarves, bags, blankets and even socks!

This scarf is knit in “tiers” of squares/triangles which take stitches from the tier below, to make new sections in the tier above. This technique is truly magic! The pattern may be confusing, but I will be there to help you along and tell you, “Just do what the pattern says, no matter how little sense it makes in your brain!”

Materials Needed*:

  • Pattern provided (http://www.allisonknits.com/entrelacscarf.pdf)
  • 4 – 5 Skeins of Noro Kureyon or Noro Silk Garden
  • US 8 or 9 depending on yarn used (straights or circulars)
  • A couple of stitch markers
  • Highlighter Tape or sticky notes

*If you choose to make the chunkier version of this scarf (see shop sample) you will need 3 - 4 skeins of the Bulky Noro Kureyon and size US 12 - 15 needles. This is a much quicker knit!

Skills Needed:

Please come to class knowing how to knit and how to purl. You will also need to know how to K2tog (knit two stitches together), P2tog (purl two stitches together) and to M1 (make a stitch) however, these skills can be learned along the way.

Bonus:

Depending on how comfortable you are with the technique toward the end of class, I will teach you how to “Knit backwards” replacing the constant flipping of the project to knit one side and purl the other.

I will be at INUA Wool Shoppe before class to help you select the perfect yarn and needles for your scarf. If you have any questions before the class feel free to contact me at gin.kinne@gmail.com.
